Featured Factfile - Richard Johnson

Richard Johnson
Born: July 27, 1977
Nationality: British
Height: 5ft 6ins
Riding Weight: 10st
Regular jockey for: Philip Hobbs

Racing Background

  • Richard’s family has a strong involvement with racing. His father was an amateur jockey and currently owns racehorses, whilst his mother, Sue Johnson, is a successful trainer.

  • He chose to become a jockey as career prospects within farming looked limited. He had also been influenced by his father’s success as an amateur jockey.

  • Richard’s talent was soon realised when he became champion conditional jockey in 1995, at the age of 18.

  • Although Richard has ridden many talented horses, he regards Viking Flagship as one of the best horses he has ever ridden, mainly due to the horse’s incredible bravery.

  • Bering Bridge is his favourite horse, as he was not only a talented racehorse, but also a ‘home-bred’.

  • One of Richard’s most memorable rides came from Anzum, in the 1999 Bonusprint Stayers’ Hurdle, his first Cheltenham Festival winner. He has since had a good record at Cheltenham, where some of his wins include the 2000 Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup with Look Like Trouble and the 2002 Queen Mother Champion Chase with Flagship Uberalles.

  • Richard was also victorious in the 2003 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle with the Philip Hobbs-trained Rooster Booster, whom he partnered again to come second in the race in 2004.

  • One person he highly respects in racing is the late David Nicholson. He was a very successful trainer and supported Richard in his bid to become a professional jockey.

  • He is currently 2nd on the all-time winningest jump jockeys list, behind AP McCoy

  • He has consistently been runner-up in the jockey’s championship, ten times since the 1997-98 season, only finishing out of second spot once when in third place behind Timmy Murphy in the 2004-5 season.

  • Richard has sustained several broken bones during his years as a jockey, including breaking his leg twice during the 2002 jumps season. This was extremely unlucky and lost time in the saddle cost him dearly in terms of his position on the championship table. However, he made a great comeback once fit enough to ride again, finishing second overall.

Other Hobbies and Interests

  • During the summer months, Richard is a keen cricketer. He also enjoys following the England rugby team.

  • If he could be anyone else in sport, he would choose to be England rugby player Jonny Wilkinson.

  • Richard’s star sign is Cancer.

  • If his time were not occupied by racing, Richard would spend more time at home on his family farm.

  • He describes his worst habit as “a tendency to eat junk food”!

CELESTIAL GOLD PUT DOWN

Celestial Gold, the winner of the Paddy Power and Hennessy Gold Cups in 2004 for former trainer Martin Pipe, has died at the age of 12. The decision was made to put him down after his health deteriorated before Christmas. Owner David Johnson said of the David Pipe-trained chaser: "He was a great servant and he gave us some great days.

"He had cancer and was in increasing pain, so the vet decided that it was in his best interest (to be put down). "He had the manners of a gentleman - he'd lick you to death rather than bite you - and he's a great loss, not only for us, but for the Moorcroft Centre, where he was being looked after so well." Celestial Gold won five of his 18 starts, earning £259,471 in prize-money, before his retirement in October 2008.

Saturday`s review of KEMPTON meeting

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls endured a day of mixed emotions at Kempton with a near 10-1 brace overshadowed by his Lanzarote faller Shamari tragically collapsing and dying in the stables after the race. The champion trainer welcomed in his first winner of 2010 as The Minack capitalised on Kennel Hill's waywardness in the williamhill.com - Live Casino Novices' Hurdle. The 13-8 favourite was in control until downing tools over the final couple of flights, which allowed Ruby Walsh to streak past aboard the 9-4 winner and inflict an eight-length beating. Nicholls said: "He will make a real chaser so we will mind him and take him to Cheltenham when he jumps a fence." Nicholls' perennial bridesmaid Fistral Beach ended a run of five second-place finishes when leading on the run-in to oblige as the 9-4 favourite in the williamhill.com - Live Sports Betting Handicap Chase. Nicholls said: "He has been a little unlucky and he ran really well the last day at Newbury. "The handicapper gave him a chance and left him unchanged for that and he deserved to get his head in front." Both The Minack and Fistral Beach were running in the colours of Graham Roach, who was not at the track. Anak became the first winner over jumps since January 3 as the mud-loving 5-1 chance made all under Tom Scudamore in the driving rain to take the williamhill.com/bonus25 - Sign Up Bonus Juvenile Novices' Hurdle. Trainer Jim Best said: "He is just a relentless galloper and Tom has given him a fantastic ride. "He will get better as the season goes on and he is a three-miler of the future." Iconoclast (5-1) ran out a laughably easy winner of the William Hill - 0800 44 40 40 Novices' Handicap Chase, with Novikov (9-2) foiling the bid of 3-1 favourite William Hogarth in the williamhill.com - Vegas Games Handicap Hurdle. Featured Factfile - Ruby Walsh

Born on the 14th of May 1979 in County Kildare, Ireland, Ruby Walsh is the son of successful Irish national hunt trainer Ted Walsh. Walsh remains a resident of County Kildare with his wife Helen, but routinely crosses the Irish Sea to race for Paul Nicholls. Walsh has sustained several serious injuries during his career, and recently had his spleen removed after suffering a serious fall during a race.

Second only to AP McCoy Ruby spends most of his time riding in Ireland where he is a 7 time National Hunt champion , as previously said he does often venture to the big meetings and festivals in England and has made Cheltenham his own , at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival Walsh rode a record-breaking seven winners over the four days including winning the Gold Cup for the 2nd time on Kauto Star , This brings his Festival total to 24, more than any jockey currently riding, and only one behind the all-time leader Pat Taaffe and he was leading jockey at the Festival in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. He won the English Grand National at the age of 20 on his 1st attempt and is the only rider currently racing to have won all 4 Nationals English , Irish , Scottish and Welsh truly an extraordinary feat in its own right . Ruby Walsh looks destined to become one of the greatest jump jockeys in the history of National Hunt racing .

Friday January 15th 2010

Once again only All Weather meetings are on today they are at Wolverhampton , Southwell and Lingfield . Huntingdon lost its battle for todays meeting and is cancelled due to a frozen course . The Jackpot meeting wasnt won again and rolls over to todays Wolverhampton meeting with over £11000 carried over .

KEMPTON PARK - Saturdays meeting is given the green light and goes ahead after a big improvement in the course conditions , the course was declared fit for racing after a 7:30am inspection today . This meeting will be the 1st Jump race meeting on turf since the 3rd January due to the severe weather we have encountered . Unfortunately Wetherbys meeting on Saturday has been lost to the weather . All being well my selections will return on Monday or Tuesday at the latest going by current weather forcasts .

Thursday January 14th 2010

Wolverhampton passes an early morning inspection so today we have 3 All Weather meetings on Wolverhampton , Southwell and Lingfield . The Jackpot wasn`t won at yesterdays Kempton meeting so we have over £5000 rolling over to todays Wolverhampton meeting ,

MUSSELBURGH`S 2 day meeting for this Friday and Saturday has now been abandoned as frost and snow still plays havock with the National Hunt cards , Tomorrows meeting at HUNTINGDON  is still touch and go and faces a 1pm inspection today . I was really hoping we may get our 1st Jump race meeting on for a while on Friday but with only HUNTINGDON left and Saturday we only have Wetherby and maybe Kempton left i`m now going to delay my selections returning until Monday 18th January . I could just turn to the All Weather but with these present conditions even they are being affected as Lingfield was called off yesterday . So rather than waste time working out my selections only to find it wasted due to the meeting being off i`d sooner wait until the weather improves slightly . I will see if we lose anymore turf races over the coming days and look at when i will return with selections at the moment i`m now going for Monday .

KEMPTON PARK Saturdays meeting will face a 3pm inspection today .

Wednesday January 13th 2010

3 All Weather meetings today at Lingfield and Southwell and an afternoon meeting at Kempton Park , Kempton (9:30am) and Lingfield (8:30am) are due to take second inspections after further Snow and frost overnight , can`t see this being to much of a problem and hopefully both cards will go ahead . Southwells meeting on the other hand will be a National Hunt Bumper meeting on its All Weather course in a bid to aid the jump trainers get some runs into some of their horses , for those who dont know what a Bumper race is its a Flat race for National Hunt horses .

Yesterdays Jackpot was won so we start again today where the jackpot meeting will be at KEMPTON , 1st race is scheduled for 4:15pm

anyone interested in going to this meeting here is some info on how to get there ,

Tuesday January 12th 2010

Again 2 all weather meetings today at Lingfield and Southwell , no problems are expected for todays meetings

Todays jackpot meeting is Lingfield

Monday January 11th 2010

2 meetings today are both subject to early morning inspections , Kempton and Wolverhampton both inspect at 7:30am and 8:00am respectively both cards have 7 races each , both the National Hunt Meetings at Ayr and Taunton were called off last week whilst it is looking possible for Friday for the 1st national hunt meeting since the big freeze where Musselburgh are hopeful if the thawing continues .

The Jackpot meeting for today will be Kempton , for those who dont know what a Jackpot bet is , The tote Jackpot is one of the most popular tote pool bets and takes place daily at one selected meeting except for Saturday when the focus moves to the Scoop6. As the tote jackpot is difficult to win the payouts are very good and the objective is to pick the winners of all 6 Jackpot races at the Jackpot meeting. The Jackpot races are always the first 6 races on the card at the selected meeting.

Yesterdays Jackpot meeting at Southwell wasnt won so nearly £21,000 pounds is carried over to the Kempton meeting
